Play! by Sephora – October 2017 Follow Up Review

Hi, guys! How are you guys today? For today’s post – as you can tell by the title, it’s a follow-up review on everything from October’s Play! by Sephora. To be completely honest I’m not blown away by this box. 2/5 of the products I’ve tried and loved, and I’m happy to have backups for them but honestly, I’d rather have completely new stuff every time. Anyway, here are all my thoughts and opinions about everything in October’s box.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Skin Booster $41.00 USD for 0.4 oz.

Claims:

What it is:
A hydrating face serum that delivers a plumped look, preps skin for makeup, and hydrates to smooth the appearance of fine lines.

What it does:
Recharge your complexion with Ultra HD Skin Booster. Rich in hyaluronic-acid and argan oil extract, it instantly hydrates skin to smooth the appearance of fine lines. It illuminates skin to prep it for makeup application, and its expertly designed, drop applicator provides the perfect amount of product. Apply before your favorite primer formula to make your makeup work even harder. The result is a perfectly smooth canvas ready for makeup application.

What else you need to know:
Deeply connected to the evolving needs of professional makeup artists and consumers alike, MAKE UP FOR EVER developed Ultra HD to meet the demands of the next generation of digital devices that display images with stunning clarity, unbelievable detail, and heightened color. Featuring a wide array of foundation and concealer shades for diverse skin tones, Ultra HD offers everything you need to prep, cover, and finish for a flawless, natural-looking complexion.

I don’t love it, but I do like it. I don’t notice a ton of hydration, however, I do notice a lot of smoothing. If you have mature skin or fine lines I think you’d really like this. Makeup sets on it well.

Rating out of 10: 7

Would I recommend or repurchase? If you have fine lines or mature skin, yes I think you’ll really like it if not love it. It is somewhat expensive so I think you should get a sample first. I might repurchase.

Dr. Brandt Skincare – PoreDermabrasion™ Pore Perfecting Exfoliator $58.00 USD for 2 oz

Claims:

What it is:
A unique professional-grade physical and chemical exfoliator and pore perfector in one.

Solutions for:
– Oiliness
– Pores
– Dullness and uneven texture

If you want to know more…
PoreDermabrasion™ Pore Perfecting Exfoliator reduces the look of enlarged pores and mattifies shine. Minimize pores while smoothing and evening skin’s texture with this dual-action formula. This exfoliator instantly* works to deeply cleanse pores while it strengthens and tightens the look of pores by removing congestion- and clogging-causing impurities. Your skin will look and feel smoother, more even, and shine-free. *Individual results may vary.

First time using this I thought it was the bomb.com. I used it all over my face and it minimized my pore by a third if not more, I was less oily, and I felt like it really cleaned my pores. The next day I broke out badly all over my chin and the breakout lasted for a week and a half. Maybe it was a user error but they don’t address rather you can use it all over the face or specifically where you have large pores. You have pores pretty much everywhere on your face so of course, most people are going to use it all over their face.

Another thing is about a week or two after using it as directed (every three or four days and only on the nose, because ya know, breakout.) I used a Biore strip because I felt like I needed it and the scrub wasn’t really cleaning my pores as much as the first use. Anyway, I let that do its do and after removing it there was a ton of “gunk” from my pores. For something with a high price like this, or anything exfoliating in general, I expect it to keep my pores clean.

I’ll continue to use the thing and let you guys know if anything changes but besides the instant pore minimizing I’m really not impressed.

Rating out of 10: 6.

Would I recommend or repurchase? If you have pores you’d like minimized, get a sample. I feel like this was amazing for minimizing but I only noticed a difference in the size of my pore after the first use. I did notice I was less oily but like I mentioned I don’t think this did a lot of cleaning my pores. I don’t see myself repurchasing it.

Urban Decay – Optical Illusion Complexion Primer $34.00 USD for 1 oz, $15.00 for .5 oz.

Claims:

What it is:
A complexion primer that instantly blurs the look of flaws, reduces fine lines and minimizes the appearance of pores.

What it does:
Ready for your most perfected-looking skin? Instantly blur flaws and smooth out your skin with Optical Illusion Complexion Primer by Urban Decay. This primer reduces fine lines and makes pores seem to vanish—for a gorgeous, porcelain-like texture. Makeup not only goes on better, but also lasts longer.

The velvety soft, lightweight primer has a slight pink tint to illuminate skin pre-makeup, but it dries down to a translucent, matte finish. It imparts a beautiful, airbrushed, and provides just enough glide to fill in lines for a smoothed-out complexion, and dries down to the perfect powdery finish.

This cushiony formula contains optical blurring pigments for beautifully perfected skin. A luxurious blend of argan, rosehip, and meadowfoam seed oils provides moisturizing and antioxidant benefits while vitamin E conditions. The perfect all-around primer, this formula works great for every skin type and concern.

Research results:
In a clinical study on 30 people, immediately after use:
– 90% of participants saw reduced visibility of pores
– 90% had smoother-looking skin
– 93% had more even-toned skin
– 81% reported a visible reduction in fine lines and blemishes

I love Optical Illusion and I’m so excited to get a backup in this box. This stuff will last forever. I’ve had the $15 mini for two or three months, I use it often and I’ve barely made a dent. I see a reduction in the size of my pores (not as much as POREfessional, but close), I have smoother skin, it’s significantly more even-toned, and it does reduce fine lines and blemishes. If you want any of that for your skin, you should try this out! It does need to be applied with your fingers, make sure to warm the product up and apply to your skin. If you use a brush or a beauty blender it can pill.

Rating out of 10: 8.5

Would I recommend or repurchase?: Yes! I think anyone would like this. It is best to moisturize or use something like Quick Fix before using this as it can be a bit on the dull side if you don’t. I’ll repurchase it for myself and add it to my pro kit.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation $43.00 USD for 1.01 oz. Shade Y245 – Soft Sand

Claims:

Coverage:
✔ Medium

Finish:
✔ Natural

What it is:
A bestselling HD foundation with an ultra-lightweight texture that melts into skin for unfiltered perfection in every light.

What it does:
Developed specifically for the film and TV industry’s most advanced technology, Ultra HD Liquid Foundation creates a naturally flawless complexion—on and off camera. Completely invisible under the latest, super-focused 4K lens, this innovative foundation is infused with uniquely-coated pigments that provide medium-to-buildable coverage with an even lighter weight, second-skin texture that looks just like skin. It delivers the very same flawless results as before when applied with a flat foundation brush in a tap and stretch motion.

Lasting all day and imparting a natural-looking finish, Ultra HD Liquid Foundation is formulated with hyaluronic spheres to ensure comfortable wear on all normal, dry, and combination skin types. Now available in an expanded range of 40 shades to match all skintones, it’s the perfect everyday foundation for a flawless complexion.

I applied this once and it was about 4 shades too dark and oxidized (turned darker and somewhat orange). Sephora mentioned in their booklet that you can return it in-store for a different shade but I wasn’t too impressed by the formula so I didn’t feel it was worth getting a different shade. It also says it’s medium coverage but the description – see above under claims – makes it sound full coverage. I have less expensive foundation that lasts better, doesn’t oxidize, has better coverage, that I like better. If you are looking for an HD foundation try Wet N Wild’s PhotoFocus.

Rating out of 10: Unrated

Would I recommend or repurchase? If you’ve been interested in this, get color matched at Sephora and get a sample of different shades. I might try this again in the future but I’m kind of over it at this point.

tarte – 4-in-1 setting mist – Rainforest of the Sea™ Collection $25.00 USD for 2.5 oz, $12.00 USD for 1.01 oz.

Claims:

What it is:
A four-in-one primer, makeup setting spray, hydrating mist, and skin refresher.

What it does:
– Multipurpose setting spray
– Primes, sets, hydrates, & refreshes while locking down makeup for 12 hours
– Formulated with antioxidant-rich algae to help smooth fine lines & wrinkles & reduce the appearance of pores

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Phthalates

What else you need to know:
This product is vegan, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested.

This stuff is really nice. I do prefer All Nighter by Urban Decay but this is a close second. It makes my makeup last and I feel like it helps to smooth skin like mentioned above. I also love that this is vegan, hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. This is also good for getting more pigment from shimmer eyeshadow.

Rating out of 10: 8

Would I recommend or repurchase? : Go for All Nighter. That stuff is like Wonder Woman if Wonder Woman was a setting spray. It’s cruelty-free, vegan, free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. I won’t be repurchasing this but I will enjoy using it.

I hope you guys enjoyed this review! Please let me know if there’s any reviews or anything you’d like to see on my blog.

  1. I got a full size of the Dr. Brandt in my Boxycharm and it also broke me out! I got horrible horrible breakouts all over my face. They just now started going away finally. 😐
