Play! by Sephora – April 2018 (Unboxing and Review)

Hi, guys! I hope you all are well today and enjoying your weekend so far. April’s Play! by Sephora box arrived two or so weeks ago and I am ready to share all my thoughts with you. First, I’d like to say that I’m really impressed with this months box and I feel like it made a huge improvement from the last two I received. Without further ado…

Miu Miu – MIU MIU L’eau Rosée $61.00 USD for 1.0 oz/ 30 mL

Fragrance Family:

Scent Type:
Fresh Floral

Key Notes:
Blackcurrant, Lily of the Valley, Musk

Miu Miu L’Eau Rosée Eau de Toilette, captures the spirit of the Miu Miu girl. This soft floral fragrance created from lily of the valley and cassis buds is tightly wrapped in notes of sophisticated musk. “

This months sample. I really like this fragrance! I don’t have a lot to say about it but I think it smells very beautiful. I don’t think I would buy a full size simply because there are other perfumes I prefer.

Fresh – Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask, $62.00 USD for 3.3 oz/ 100mL

“What it is:
A multi-benefit, five-minute facial in a jar that instantly resets the skin while targeting dullness, rough texture, and uneven skin tone.

Solutions for:
– Dullness and uneven texture
– Uneven skin tone
– Dryness

If you want to know more…
Highlight your natural beauty with this Lotus five-minute facial in a jar. This multi-benefit mask targets dullness, rough texture, uneven tone, dryness, and congestion, leaving skin incredibly soft and restoring its natural radiance (perfect for those no-makeup days). Powered by a blend of kombu seaweed, red algae, and lotus seed powder, the mask works to gently buff and refine the skin.”

I was so excited to try this mask because a year or so ago Play! sent me the Lotus moisturizer, which I really liked. This mask did not disappoint! I feel like it helps with dryness and evens out my skin tone.

It definitely smells seaweed-esque however the scent doesn’t really bother me. It has a slightly grainy texture, it also has a lot of seeds. You can get a good idea of it by looking at the picture above. It’s a bit like thin yogurt with oregano in it.  The sample I received was 0.5 oz and I got two uses out of it. It feels like it takes a lot of product for one use, that’s the only con about this mask to me. I don’t think I will buy the full size but overall I did enjoy this mask. I would sooner buy the rose face mask from Fresh.

MAKE UP FOR EVER – Ultra HD Perfector Skin Tint Foundation SPF 25 in 6 (warm sand), $36.00 USD for 1.01 oz/ 30 mL

What it is:
A revolutionary skin tint that blurs and enhances the look of skin for a perfected complexion.

What does:
This innovative, weightless formula creates a blurring effect that enhances and perfects the look of skin. Whether you’re new to foundation or an enthusiast seeking a fresh alternative, this sheer-to-medium coverage tint flatters every face. Long-lasting hydration combined with SPF 25, keep skin feeling supple and protected. Ultra HD Perfector breaks all of the limits we’ve come to expect from foundations with a texture that’s effortless to apply with your fingertips, a nurturing formula, and a long-lasting natural finish. This is your most natural, perfected skin, on demand.

Ultra HD Perfector is available in 10 shades, with each individual shade spanning uniquely across multiple skin tones.

What else you need to know:
Ultra HD Perfector’s advanced technology offers ten flexible shades that adapt to fit a range of three to five skin tones each. Formulated with warm pigments, this unique formula refreshes and awakens skin for a healthy look. It is made to fit easily into busy schedules and abbreviated makeup routines, while flexing to match your complexion at any point throughout the year.”

I can’t believe we got this foundation! It just launched a month ago or so. Plus, my favorite foundation right now is from Make Up For Ever, so that made this product the icing on the cake. I was so happy to see this in my box, I was probably most excited about it.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out like I hoped it would. First, the shade they sent me (06) is too dark. They do mention that this foundation has “advanced technology offers ten flexible shades that adapt to fit a range of three to five skin tones each”. I would agree that this shade adapted to my skin, but I think it stayed pretty warm toned. I’m yellow/cool toned, so it didn’t look the best on me. Below are three pictures were taken on the same day, for foundation I only used HD Perfector.

These two photos below were taken on the same day, 4 days before the photos above. I used Make Up For Ever Water Blend foundation in the shade Y245, plus Physicians Formula -The Healthy Foundation in LN3 where I needed more coverage (cheeks and forehead.).

I think everyone would agree that the second set of photos look better. Water Blend is the perfect shade for me but it’s sheerer and easier to blend then HD Perfector. Water Blend has less coverage but it somehow covers nearly everything you want it to and makes your skin look so good.

HD Perfector is okayish, but I have more cons about it than pros. The only pros that stand out to me right now is that the product has SPF and it kind of adjusts to your shade. Onto the cons.. this foundation does not blend easily. It becomes steaky when blending. It’s very patchy. It kind of seems like the more you try to build it, it starts taking away product. It wants to be full coverage and sheer coverage at the same time, which makes it look really weird. It emphasizes try spots and any acne. You get my point, it’s just not a great foundation.

I feel like the ‘advanced technology’ that helps this product adjust to your skin tone is what throws this product off. When you apply the foundation it is light in some areas and darker in some areas. It’s just a bit of a mess. Overall, I’m disappointed with this foundation and definitely wouldn’t recommend it, but if you are curious about it, head to your local Sephora to get a sample. If you are looking for a sheer foundation for summer, try Water Blend.

Urban Decay – Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lip Gloss in SPL (holographic candy pink w/ iridescent sparkle), $20.00 USD for 0.23 oz/ 7 mL

“What it is:
An ultra-shiny lip gloss that glides on cushiony-soft and provides long-lasting wear that’s comfortable, not tacky.

What it does:
Laced with vitamin E and peppermint oil, Urban Decay’s hydrating formula leaves lips feeling nourished, creates the look of fuller lips, and comes in a yummy vanilla-mint flavor. And wait until you see the lineup. Whatever gloss frequency you’re on, Hi-Fi has got you covered. Tune in to everything from blaring brights to soft neutrals in four different finish effects—metallic, holographic, cream, and sheer cream.”

This is another product was I was so excited and shocked to see in this months box, it just launched a month or two ago!

I really like this gloss. It’s not something I would ever by for myself or wear on a daily basis but I think it’s so fun. It does have a pretty heavy vanilla/mint scent/feel, I personally don’t mind it. I would compare it to the scent of peppermint bark. I don’t feel like it creates the look of fuller lips or plumps my lips but I’m fine with that. It’s not too tacky and not at all gloopy/sticky. This does last longer than regular glosses, in my opinion.

The only con I have about this is that I started getting this weird white line on the inside of my lips. I’m not really sure what that was from but I’ve never had it happen with another gloss. That isn’t a huge con for me because you couldn’t see it unless I opened my mouth and it didn’t feel weird, but I felt to mention it since this is a review.

IT Cosmetics – Bye Bye Pores Pressed™ Poreless Finish Airbrush Pressed Powder, $29.00 USD for 0.31 oz/ 9 g

What it is:
A bestselling, award-winning, translucent powder formula that erases the look of pores and imperfections for airbrushed perfection.

Solutions for:
– Enlarged pores
– Fine lines and wrinkles”

I really like It Cosmetics so of course I was excited to see this! I love everything I’ve tried from the Bye Bye line so my hopes were high for this powder.

I was not disappointed! This blurs your pores so good. It’s like an optical illusion, pores one minute and they are gone the next. This powder sets your face well and I love taking it on the go for oil control. It also sets the under eyes really well, I had little to no creasing and no mascara transfer.

The only con I have about this is that is is really white. The more you blend it, the more it works into your skin and it eventually looks translucent. I haven’t tested it under flash but I have a feeling it would have major flashback. Make sure when you use this powder you start out applying it sparingly, a little goes a long way.

I think I would buy a full size of this powder and I definitely recommend it for mature skin or large pores. If you have dry skin you might want to skip this powder or just use it sparingly.

Peter Thomas Roth – Skin to Die For™ No- Filter Mattifying Primer & Complexion Perfector $28.00 USD for 1 oz/ 30 mL

What it is:
A sheer, lightweight, mattifying primer that provides immediate results and long-term benefits.

Solutions for:
– Pores
– Fine lines and wrinkles
– Oiliness”

I like this primer but there are some things I dislike. It is very sheer, lightweight and mattifying as claimed. It doesn’t make you look dull but it keeps oil at bay. It’s not great for oil control but it’s good. I would say that it does help with longevity. I don’t feel like it does anything to minimize pores. If I wore this primer again I would definitely use something like Benefit’s POREfessional on my pores.

I tried it on my sister who has dry skin and it did emphasize dry patches, so if you have dry skin I would skip on this primer. Overall I like this but it’s not my holy grail by any means. I would sooner recommend trying Urban Decay’s Optical Illusion primer, which is one of my favorites.

A swatch of Skin to Die For™ is at the end of this post.

Top to bottom: It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores powder, Make Up For Ever HD Perfector foundation in 6, Peter Thomas Roth primer, Urban Decay Lip Gloss in SPL.

  1. You got PTR and IT Cosmetics!! I’m never lucky enough to get those brands. I have the bye bye pores illumination. I love it. It’s not sparkly either like Mineral Veil By BM. That mask looks divine!

  3. I don’t understand why boxes like these send you foundations and stuff without knowing your skin tone. It just kinda stinks! I love the color of that lipgloss though, so pretty!

    1. I know! Minor rant but it gets on my nerves that I have my Color IQ on my profile and they sent me such a dark shade. On top of that, I was matched a little over 2 months ago for 2 MUFE foundations so they isn’t any reason for me to get a color so dark. I wear their Ultra HD foundation in ‘Yellow Alabaster’ so I have no idea why they would send me Warm Sand 😂 The lipgloss really is lovely, I’ve been wearing it a lot with a bare face and it looks so pretty!

      1. Honestly, I agree 100%. I really don’t get why they couldn’t take the extra effort to give everyone their correct shade? It would be way more beneficial to you and them. I don’t know it’s just dumb that they don’t!
